Peter Spriggs's paintings from 1983 to 1986 were concerned with architectural themes. The main subject matter was derived from late nineteenth century and early twentieth century industrial and urban buildings in Cardiff and the Rhondda Valley. Spriggs was born and grew up in Cardiff and his mother was from the Rhondda Valley.
The paintings in this Mini Retrospective involve a subjective and emotional content. Visual observations and the intensity of emotional responses to the subjects are combined and retain experiences in their essential aspects before they disappear. Each painting may be viewed in the following way: image as architecture rather than architecture as image. However, the original building remains the essential feature adhered to throughout the painting process.
